I would like to take a moment to recognize some of the unsung heroes at Morton College. Many of us may have hurried past these dedicated individuals while rushing to our next class or navigating the campus. I have made it a personal practice to acknowledge our custodians and greet them with a warm smile. Not only because they make our college peaceful and give it the spark that reflects in our eyes, but because I can imagine that they have delightful personalities, loving families, and special hobbies and skills.
As I was curious to get to know their lives outside of Morton College, I interviewed one of our custodians, Manuel Jimenez, who is always in high spirits.
According to Jimenez, he will celebrate his three-year anniversary at the college in July of 2025, and he absolutely loves his job and what he does for the school. Jimenez noted his passion for cleaning and added that he is satisfied with his supervisors and receives excellent treatment.
When asked to share a little bit of his background, Jimenez told me, “Besides cleaning, my number one passion is cooking. I have six children who have grown fast; however, I still love to cook for them and my wife. My favorite dish is Chile Relleno (peppers stuffed with cheese and drenched in a special soup) and Chile Pasado, because it can be roasted, peeled, and preserved to be cooked in many ways.”
“I adore my wife,” he continued. “She has been a kindergarten teacher for 27 years in the Chicago Public School District. We take pride in her contributions to our community in Little Village. She teaches bilingual classes to children who have just arrived in the States.”
Speaking with him, I can understand why Jimenez consistently radiates positivity. He is a compassionate and loving person, enriched by a remarkable background and a warm heart. After interviewing him, I expressed my gratitude for his time and for all that he does for us here at Morton College.

Thank you Jessica for this lovely piece. I look forward to greeting Manuel and asking him for cooking tips! 💜
