The Morton Collegian

The voice of the Morton College community.

Club Spotlight: Phi Theta Kappa

Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) is a National Honor Society that helps students develop their leadership skills, recognizes student academic and community achievements, and provides members with scholarship opportunities.

Morton College has a chapter on campus named Theta Omicron, and it is the first five-star chapter in the last twenty years. The five-star designation recognizes chapters that have achieved the highest level of engagement and success in campus and community activities, demonstrating excellence in academic achievement, leadership, and service.

Theta Omicron’s chapter advisor, Angelo Greene, and board officers have worked hard to achieve that success. The first requirement for membership in PTK is academic excellence, with a 3.0 GPA and twelve completed credit hours needed for students to qualify.

Community service is also a cornerstone of PTK’s impact on campus. Last semester, for their Honors in Action Project, the organization planned and hosted “PTK Viva Fiesta,” a two-part event. On September 16th, they sold 300 churros in less than two hours to raise money for the organization. Then two weeks later, they gave a presentation on transfer scholarships, brought El Snack Cart to campus, put on a loteria event, and invited students to celebrate with piñatas. The goal of the event was to increase student engagement on campus and build Morton College’s community of students, faculty, and staff.

PTK also implemented an initiative called the College Project, aimed at helping students with their academics. Partnering with the Tutoring Center the week before finals, PTK facilitated connections between students and faculty members that could assist them with their studies. The event was a huge success! After reporting the events to Phi Theta Kappa’s national office, Morton’s chapter earned their five-star designation.

Networking is also a benefit of membership in PTK. For example, last October, Theta Omicron attended a regional conference to speak with other PTK chapters and meet other highly motivated students, which will help members as they continue their studies and even when they look for a job after graduation. Currently, Morton’s chapter is working to raise money to attend the Catalyst Conference in April, taking place this year in Kansas City, Missouri. This will be an opportunity to meet Phi Theta Kappa chapters from all over the world!

While many of the current board members will be graduating this Spring, they are very hopeful that future board officers and members will continue this legacy of excellent work and strive to be leaders on Morton’s campus.
